What is Your Why?

I’m inspired by Simon Sinek’s words: “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” As a leader, what’s your why?

This simple question often catches my clients off guard. Many have mission statements framed on their walls. Some even strive to live them. Yet few have defined their personal “why” as a leader. It’s a question worth answering.

A clear “why” brings focus and direction. It cuts through the noise. Here’s how it helps:

First, it sharpens your priorities. Your endless to-do list becomes manageable.

Second, it guides tough choices. Whether it’s people or operations, your purpose lights the way.

Third, in today’s wild business world—think gladiator arena or raging storm—pausing to reflect on your “why” calms the chaos and reveals a path forward.

Start with your values. Pick the two or three that matter most. They’ll shape your personal purpose as a leader. A clear purpose is your armor. Don’t step into the arena without it.

So, I ask you: What’s your “why” as a leader? Let’s explore it together.

Joyfully,

Art
