Why Connection Matters Tremendously
Stress can feel overwhelming. In those moments, staying connected with others is hugely important. I call it a warm, kindly connection – even when someone pushes your buttons.
What Happens When We Disconnect
Under pressure, if we pull away:
-
We hold back our energy and vitality.
-
We become hard to read.
-
We stop taking risks.
-
Our spark fades. We feel closed off.
The Downside of Overdoing Positivity
-
Trying too hard to stay upbeat can also hurt:
-
You might seem unreal or unreachable.
-
It’s difficult to relate honestly to someone who only shows the positive side.
How to Recognize Real Connection
Pause and notice what you feel inside. Look for these warm signs:
Joy, Confidence, Vitality, Resilience, Buoyancy, Stability, Self-assurance, Energy, Liveliness, Bravery, Curiosity, Eagerness, Elation, Comfort, Relaxation, Hope, Excitement, Optimism, Boldness
When these feelings arise naturally, you’re likely staying genuinely connected.
The Bottom Line
In stressful times, a warm, genuine connection keeps us open, alive, and courageous. It fuels honesty in relationships and helps us thrive–even when things get tough. To build your capacity to connect practice gratitude each day.
-
Take a few quiet moments each day to write out four things you are grateful for.
-
Including tactile and sensory items helps you get out of your head.
-
Do this in your calendar or other work notebook for future review.
